![]() If you currently have a machine with MS Office installed, then install the latest version and take it for a spin. Sometimes it just works, sometimes things change for no good reason.Īlso keep in mind one of the best things about open source software is the freedom it gives. I've used Libre/Open office for just over a decade, I'd say the issues with moving/changing/formatting when opened in MS Office is about the same you have if two people are using different versions of MS Office. For the most part though I now prefer to just use Office online, which finally supports opening encrypted documents - which was the biggest reason why I was using LO/OO in the first place. Since then, I've been careful to use OO only to view MSO files, or edit simple files which didn't employ complex formatting or didn't require further editing. I decided not to fix my other docs until someone complains about it. Attempting to fix and recreate all the elements would've taken so long that I had to recreate the entire doc in MSO. I created and submitted a bunch of docx's from this template in OO - thought it was all good, until one day when I opened one of my previous documents in MSO and was shocked to find out that the radio buttons (and some other form elements) were all converted to non-editable images. It's not a very complex document mind you, just a form-looking form. One such problem I noticed was with one of our docx templates which contained a form with some radio buttons. There are some issues in the conversion/saving process that you may not notice until you view or edit that document back in MSO, at which point it may be too late to fix. LibreOffice sucks because the people who code and review the system are not user-focused, rather they are developers who are tool-focused. It’s still available via LibreOffice’s site, though. An unofficial version of LibreOffice was recently uploaded to the Microsoft Store, but now doesn’t show up if searched directly in the store. LibreOffice’s 5.1 update added support for Windows 10. LibreOffice is a powerful and free alternative to Microsoft Office. ![]() Should I switch from OpenOffice to LibreOffice? Can LibreOffice replace Microsoft Office? You see, Microsoft doesn’t want you to buy its next office suite: Office 2019. ![]() It may also be your best choice for a standalone desktop office suite in the years to come. The latest edition, LibreOffice 6.3, is better than ever. It works well, it’s free, and it does everything I’ve ever needed an office suite to do. If you’re going to be sharing documents with people using Microsoft Office, LibreOffice might therefore be the better choice. Although both LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice can open and edit native Microsoft formats DOCX and XLSX, only LibreOffice is able to save to these formats.
